Things that annoy me about action shows

1: You do not lead with your weapon. Holding your weapon out ahead of you, especially around corners, will only result in your losing said weapon.

2: When trying to not be noticed, do not slink about, furtively darting looks everywhere. That is the sure way of getting noticed.

3: If you have to sneak yet hurry across a smooth glossy surface, take off those effing hard heeled or high heeled shoes. This way you can move about silently. Carry them if you really don't want to leave them behind, but take them off!

4: You can't outrun the pyroclastic flow of an explosion. Sorry, you're toast! or as Aikidomayland said "VAPE!"

5: You do not stand there waving your weapon around, showing off your prowess and dexterity, in a kill or be killed situation, bouncing from foot to foot waiting for the bad guy to attack. You have the advantage, you take it.

This list is subject to change when I notice other blatantly stupid things.

Whenever I think....

The evaporative AC system isn't all that great, I go stand outside for about 5 minutes and come back in.

Perspective is an amazing thing.

The time might be here

Where we say g'bye to our foster Bengals, Lucy and Simba. An couple who are a bit wiser than their previous owners are very interested in them. We will be giving full disclosure of them, about Simba 'improperly toileting' on carpets, furniture and beds when he is stressed, and when he really doesn't get his way (He did this after we refused to let him in the back lounge room where Ziggy was.) That Lucy has a heart murmur, and she has to go to the vet ever 6 months, without fail, to keep an eye on that. It's a case of when she will need medication for it, not if.

It's a bit sad, as they have become part of our home and routine. I had just gotten Simba comfortable enough to take slivers of raw tuna from my fingers. Yes, I will miss them, should they go.

Here is Lucy and Loki playing tag or Gotcha Last!.

Simba haz a box!

That long walk to the shops yesterday...?

Might not have been such a good idea. *wince*

Oh goodie

Cyberlink gave me the URL to download the full installation file. Then the damned thing wouldn't install. Kept having the same installation error.

I dug in like a tick, and managed to find the right phrasing for search terms, and finally, after several hours figured it out myself!

Should anyone else have this problem, this is what needs to be done if running Windows 7.

Install Windows Installer Clean up and run it - Remove YouCam 3.0.0.0 from the list.

This is the trickier part, as you have to disable Windows 7 Rollback function by editing the registry. Unlike Vista or XP, the roll back function isn't even listed in the registry, so you have to manually add it.

Here is a link to a step by step with images.

http://www.liutilities.com/products/registrybooster/tweaklibrary/tweaks/11391/

Follow the instructions, then reboot. Proceed with installation.

This disabling of the the rollback can be removed afterward, or just edited to a 0 to re-enable the rollback function.

Time to take a break.

Proof of Brain Dead tech support?

And my response to their 'reply'

And they wonder why Tech Support has such a lousy reputation

One of the programs that came bundled with my computer keeps popping up this blue UPDATE arrow, but it crashes on the installation of the update, so I head to the support area for the software and submit this:

How can I manually install the update file?

Whenever I start YouCam, I see an Up arrow for updating. When I click on it, the download commences and finishes just fine. But The file keeps erroring out on installation. I need to run the file as Administrator, but I have no idea where the automatic download sends the file, or the file name

(I clearly state on the form, that the software came bundled with the computer)

This is the brain dead answer I get.

Thank you for contacting CyberLink Technical Support.

I understand that you are using CyberLink YouCam 3 software and you are facing issue related with installing the YouCam 3 software.

So, this is my reply....( I was soooo tempted to type "I am typing this out slowly because I know you cannot read very fast, but I didn't)

Didn't anyone bother to read where it said the software was bundled with my Acer (Acer Aspire Prestige, Purchased Jan 29th 2010). I'm looking at the saved form data, and there it all is. I never said anywhere anything about 'purchased'. I clearly state it came preinstalled, bundled on my computer. This is why Tech Support gets such a lousy reputation.

So, one more time: YouCam 3.0 which CAME BUNDLED with Acer computer pops up a Blue Arrow for update. When I update, it downloads fine, but when it starts to install, I get the error that I have attached below once again. I probably have to run the update file "Run as Administrator", as I am using Windows 7 Professional, 64 bit.

Let's see if he/she switches on her brain this time.

I know imitation is supposed to be a form a flattery

But when someone crosses the line...

I took a photograph of Ziggy and posted it on one of the art sites I am registered one.

Imagine my surprise when someone submitted this as an original work of his very own, even with a nifty story about how his cat disappeared, and he still misses him. (Yes, it sounds like the story of my Affy who when missing

Here is the my photograph, on a layer above 'his' artwork at 50% opacity.

It was great

Oh wow, was it worth it setting up those solar lights around the pool. Oh my. Hot night, a quick dunk and floating around.

It's such a pity that was passes for winter around here tends to be deluges of rain, or I would just cover the pool with a solar heater and use it during the cooler weather.

I am not a "Gadget Whore"

Traded in my FlyBuys Points (a loyalty card) for a Black and Decker wet/dry Dustbuster. I showed Aikidomayland what the choices were, but the ultimate decision was mine.

He started calling me a "Gadget Whore" after I told him he will no longer have an excuse for not vacuuming the car, or using an entire roll of paper towels to pick up a spill (that boggled me. A container of water got knocked over on a rug, and he got paper towels to mop it up when there was a rug cleaner right there. 'Domestically Challenged' comes to mind.)

So every time he called me a gadget whore, I called him and ink slut. (See Kae-Dash , I did create a monster.)

Summer set up

Set up solar powered lights which can be switched over to bug zappers around pool so I can use pool on hot nights w/o attracting every mosquito in 50km radius! Of course, by the time I got them all set and charged up, I'm ready for some snooze time.

Things I like and dislike about Windows 7

Pros:
Faster boot up, more stable (then again, the San Andreas fault is more stable than Vista) and with the "Run in XP Compatible Mode", runs everything I have thrown at it so far, including Win95 programs. The 'pinned to task bar' to me is just a new version of the Quick Launch. Instead of a scrolling menu, they are lined up. (I use yLaunch),

Cons:
If you make your own custom desktop settings, it keeps creating new "unsaved" versions of the desktop settings/themes for gods know what reasons. It's a common problem, and none of the fixes listed actually fix this. It will also arbitrarily re-arrange desktop icons. (Use freeware version of FENCES, took snapshot of the layout, and when it gets re-arranged, just restore snapshot) Doesn't save desktop settings on exit, but only intermittently. I do not like the new version of the Start menu. I don't care you can search through it, it sucks. I want to be able to point and click, not point, search, type, click and then run. I fixed that with "Classic Start Menu" which ended up having for flexibility and user friendly than the Win7 native start menu.

No DOS full screen ability. That was also a Vista issue, which is why I will always have one computer that runs XP, even if it's a laptop, as none of those 'Virtual" ones work worth a damn.

Also, as with Vista, no Up arrow in Windows Explorer. The "Back" isn't a substitute for it. I got "Mavis Up Arrow" for that.

Is it all the big brouhaha is saying it is? No, it's what Vista was supposed to be.

Pool/Mosquito update

After one night after cleaning the filter cartridge and of increased aeration the pool is free of mosquito larvae. I waded through the pool with the sieve making random scoops in the water and found none.

Go me.

Lime Daiquiris

Made from the limes of my own tree. A cool, yummy end of a hot day.

Archery this morning was odd. Started off well, but then the temperature soared. Everyone kind of wilted and went home early.

Cooled off for a bit, and then tackled chlorinating and cleaning the pool and filter before taking a dip. Had a small problem with mosquito larvae because the tarp didn't fit, would sink in on one side, letting in a 'puddle' to sit stagnant in the middle of the tarp. Got those taken care of, and ordered the fitted pool cover for it. I put the water feature water pump in the pool, to increase aeration. That along with the water filter will take care of the problem.

Also had to hunt around for filter cartridge replacements. After much fruitless searching, I stumbled across one phrase. "Compatible with Type 1". Led me to the filter replacements. I order 2 (they come in pairs).

All that took about 4 hrs. I got my cool splash time. Blessed relief.

And now, sipping on a deliciously cold lime daiquiri. Aikidomayland is enjoying his, too.

I haz a sneepy

It's been a long day. Too early of a start. Too many late nights. I am knackered. Decided to be 'lazy' tonight and ordered pizza. Maghuerita pizza mostly for me, and something else for Aikidomayland and Alan.

It's gonna be an early night for it. It's all I can do to keep my eyes open right now.

Ziggy goes fishing!

Ziggy, our Bengal, is fascinated with the "Lagoon" screen saver. Here she is trying her luck at 'fishing'. Please excuse the breathing noises, I was trying not to laugh.

To all those unhelpful "Well, we got ours in December"

I'm happy for you.

Yes, by my replying to the "Well, you should have gotten it" is proof my iinet email address is valid.

One more time:

Never got it. If Wing got it (he says he didn't), he didn't see fit to pass it along?

That all cleared up now? Good. Now stop channeling Tech support.

Good thing for 3 Mobile Broadband

Even though this isn't the reason I got it, I am using my mobile broadband USB modem so at least my computer use isn't snipping away at the little bit of traffic we have left until they drop us back to 'dial up' speed.

Next month should be ok, as we won't be having three new computers to be set up, with all the update and software downloads. Yay. But I don't think my having a fall back lets IINET off the hook.

Ok, now I am pissed off at IINET

THe sneaky bastards changed what hours are "Off Peak". After years of offpeak being 2am until 12pm, they changed it to 1am to 9am, and didn't bother to notifiy.

So, all those careful downloads I thought I was doing during offpeak (I would shut off any downloads at noon sharp) f**king chewed through our Peak traffic.

Way to go IINET.

Not locked, huh?

Found out this morning that Aikidomayland padlocked the zipper pulls of the cat enclosure together, but neglected to:

A: Give me a set of keys to unlock it.

B: Unlock it before he left.

C: Then tell me to check his suitcase pockets. The extra keys were in there.

D: And then try to tell me I am wrong when I told him the suitcase was locked.

I asked him "I would if the suitcase wasnt locked. What? You afraid someone is gonna steal dustbunnies in it?"

He insists it can't be locked as he used the lock to lock the enclosure.

I then asked him should I get some NotBoltCutters and remove them?

He then said look inside, instead. The only thing in there was another lock, and a plastic bag from Electronic Boutique. I asked him if he wanted me to take a picture of that and send it to him, too.

New and improved

I am now trying out a 5 day supply of daily wear contacts. Wear them once, then chuck em. I keep having problems with wearing my regular contacts. Dr R thinks it might be an allergic reaction to the cleaning solutions, and now that toric lenses are available for daily wear we decided to try them. They are so light weight, it's like nothing is on my eyes. Even with my regular contacts, I could feel them. Not these.

Keeping fingers crossed.

I am shorn

Hair's no longer to back of knees. Decided to lop off about 7 inches (18cms) of it off. Not because it's damaged, but because it grows in uneven. The ends were all zig zagged, looked like a mountain range or an ECG. I clipped the long lock of hair with a barette and gave it to Aikidomayland . Told him when I am old and grey, we can take it out to remember what color my hair used to be.

Feels kind of weird.

And for less than Hardly Normal was charging..

I upgraded to Win7 Pro via the web. I don't need Ultimate, as I have my own Encryption software, and don't need multi language. But I do have some old tried and true 98/XP programs that never had updates made available, but still work great.

Gawd I am such a nerd.

The "Sung" hero has returned

Un-son, Robin is back from his trip to Germany. Poor kid came back with a nastly cold. I jokingly asked for post cards, and made sure I didn't say mail them as he would have gotten back before they did. *laugh* Beer ads.

Everything is just about set up now. It's amazing how much each new incarnation is remarkably similar in set up. A few of my graphics program plugins don't work with 64fbit, but will wait to update them.

Riddle me this, other cat owners of LJ (or is that bloggers owned by cats?): why is it when I go to be very very late (after 1am) Loki is polite about waking us up a the usual time, but when we go to bed at the saner and earlier hour, he becomes the juggernaut of pounce, jump, and thud?

A Bengal "Family" Update

Lucy on my telescope box, and Simba on the stereo. It makes me feel so great to see them sleeping out in the open, totally relaxed, and at home. And we can walk by them and they don't even twitch a whisker. They're still eating more than average, but they are active, and not pudging, so all is well.

Simba's mother/Lucy's great great great aunt (cat generations) regally decorates the back of a sofa.

Ah, the joy of ISO files

After the crash and burn of Acerbeast 5 yrs ago, I decided to turn all my installation discs into ISO files. These were then either burned to a DVD or archived on external hard drive.

THe joy of this is that in just two days, I have 'Cheetah' up and running. Mounted the ISOs onto a virtual drive, and voila! I'm sure there area few Photoshop or Paintshop plugins I haven't installed yet, but I'll get to them. What also helps is that Paul archived my old program files (x86) directory, so I could go through it, copy what could be, and reinstalled as needed.

Bonus! My Sacred 2 character is 'alive and well'.

Once more unto the crucible

FINALLY! I have the 'right' computer. (h.t. and lift of glass to SlightlySatan for transport and preventing me from throttling someone)  I have never been so jerked around as I have been by Acer Inc.  It will be a cold day in hell I ever speak kindly of their customer service.

I have it about 75% set up.  Mostly because I have all the installation files in a Stakka and I have emailed certain documents to my gmail account, so I have quick access to it. Also, I am just that cautious, and make back ups of my browser profile, and other things.  I think I've had enough for one night, though.
