Another thing that happened yesterday

Three times I got stopped and asked about my "I Am A Local Photographer! Not a Tourist!" shirt. One woman in the bread section of Coles Freo, two girls in the softdrink section, and a gent in the dairy area. The woman in the bread section of COLES Freo asked me "Do you wear that when you're overseas?" I sorta chuckled and said "I am overseas". Then splained about how when I went out and about taking photos, people would ask why. When they heard US accent this is a wood for word exchange.

"Oh, so how long will you be staying here?

"Been 10 years so far."

"When are you going back home?"

*looked at watch* "In about 30 minutes, when dinner is ready."

She walked away laughing.

Similar convos and reactions with the others who stopped me.

Busy weekend so far

There is a cyclone (aka hurricane) heading our way. Should mostly just get wind and rain. Not much to worry about 'local flooding' as we are high on a hill area. Today was last day of intermediate DSLR classes. I brushed up on my film to digital lingo and how tos, and Aikidomayland was amazed at how far he has progressed.

Went pillaging afterward. Dayam, the price of fresh veggies is really climbing. Goiing to try to talk Wing into getting part of the back yard renovated and set up for a built up garden.

Something laster on kind of shocked and pissed me off. Shocked me to see that another adult was just as backstabbingly bitchy to Wing as the old shrew crew was to Meegan and me. Said persons antics left me wanting to dump bucket of cold water over said persons head. Oh, if you hadn't noticed, I'm deliberately avoiding gender. It's called 'plausible deniablity'. If this blog post makes you squirm, then you are the one I am referring too, so suck it up !

Android tablet Test

I have been 'experimenting' (for want of a better term) with a low end Android Tablet, called the ePad. Now, comparing it to the iPad would be silly, as that would be like comparing a VeeDub with a Mercedes.

Keeping that in mind, I will say that yes, the little ePad does perform its functions. The USB hub is a bit tricky to not to bump, but it does work, allowing me to use both a mini keyboard and USB Modem. There was a bit of a boondoggle getting the 3G set up via USB modem. Mostly impatience on my part, but when it takes 3 minutes for something to connect, one would tend to thinks something isn't working. Once connected, I did some websurfing.

The pages were slow to load, and it has this annoying habit (can't find how to disable this either) of going to the 'mobile' version of webpages, even when you try to go to the full site. This can prevent the tablet from getting bogged down, but it can also prevent one from being able to download and install things, like the Audible audiobook reader (beta version from Google groups crashes on install attempt, no joy there). The Android App market doesn't have it listed, either.

I was able to install the Kindle App, and it works pretty damn well. A bit slow to 'turn the page', but not so slow I would stop reading. About on par with the time it would take you to find your coffee/tea/drink of choice, sip, and start reading again.

I have been trying different video formats on it, and it's hit or miss. I suggest getting a video converter program, and work out what format you want that will play back smoothly.

The Camera.. all i can say is it does work. Think of webcams from about 5 yrs ago.

Battery life - Dimming the screen, and shutting off unnecessary apps running in the background will give you 2 , maybe 3 hrs, max.

So yes, it works. Does exactly what it's made to do. It's fine for quick email check, websurfing, and e-book reading. I haven't tried any games out on it, as that wasn't what I had wanted to test for. But keep the charger, or external power source handy if you need running for 4+ hours.

Persistence paid off!

I have been getting the wild birds habituated to "Human comes out, fresh watter arrives" as a routine for the past few weeks, but all I have been able to get are blurry photos of the Brown Honeyeater (thanks Gemfyre for the id on the bird). Today, I filled it a bit earlier, then waited.

One very small Brown Honeyeater, and to compare sizes, a wattlebird standing on the same spot.

I have been remiss

With Aikidomayland's on vacation, and DSLR instructions (with me tagging along for moral support mostly) I haven't been posting often. I have been taking some fantastic photos myself, but haven't really had the sit down time to sift through them. Here are a few. I have been hanging out near my little potted lime tree, habituating the birds to my being out there. I guess it's working. Soggy Wattlebird in four parts

Part 1: diving right in!

Part 2: Coming up for air.

Part 3: Shake some off

Part 4: Settle feathers so it can fly.

I have been trying to get photos of this itty bitty honey eater, about the size (for my use friends) of a Hummingbird. I am hoping they will come around during the morning when I have enough light to use a high shutter speed, but as it stands now, they keep coming around late afternoon, early evening.

EDIT: This is the best photo I have been able to get of this small honeyeater (not sure what variety) Compare it to the brute in the photos above, and you can understand why getting a clear shot of this little thing needs brighter light, faster shutter speeds.

Weekend almost over

Had a great photo instruction session yesterday. Aikidomayland learned lots, and I got to play a bit. I also took photos of our victim errrr model. I am a kind person, all bad photos get deleted and she will just get the good ones.

Also spotted this very interesting gent. He was walking his bike. The front basket was filled with fresh bottlebrush branches with their leaves, a rolled up towel as big around as my wrist, and in it was a short billed corella. I took a photo of them both.

After I walked over to talk to him.

Turns out he and the bird have been together for 42 years. Talk about lifelong friends!

OnOne Photo Suite5.5

I had looked at this image processing software for a while, but the price was prohibitive. But just before the holidays, they had a 50% off sale, and you could install it on two computers. So, I took the plunge.

It has really helped Aikidomayland with his photo processing (he shoots HQ Jpeg). It comes with tools for just about any color correctly, fine tuning, or even textures and FX you might want.

I had gotten the PhotoTools Pro 2.5 when OnOne was running a special (buy now at 40% off, and get free upgrade to 2.6) and installed it on my back up laptop, and for some odd reason, was able to install Photo Suite onto that computer without a hitch. Not that I am advocating sneaky underhanded methods of bypassing someone's copyright, but for some reason, PhotoSuite didn't give the pop up request for the rego/serial on the laptop, but seems to have taken the serial number for Phototools. So, I was able to install it on three computers, rather than two.

If it has escaped your noticed

One doesn't need to watch TV or listen to the radio to hear/read violent political rhetoric. There is this newish invention called 'the internet', with some of it's most prosperous children "YouTube", Facebook, and hundreds of blogs out there just chock full of violent political rhetoric.

So, all the RWNJs saying "Loughner never watched Palin/Beck/Billo because he never watched TV" are either naive or flat out lying. I know that the sheeple that are your audiences will be nodding their heads, all the while going onto the internet to blog your silliness, and maybe even re-watching it on YouTube

Testing Sigma 18-250

At first I thought my purchase curse had struck again, as it seems that photo taken at the full on 250 zoom has a 'soft focus'. But after talking with Aikidomayland it turns out that at max zoom, the Sigma tends to fuzz the images. The good news is at 200 to 220 all is well.

Now I have get my kit ready for tomorrow night. We have another "Intermediate Session" with Greg.

The Lies just roll off his tongue

Cantor claims all the spending bills are the Democrats fault, as the Republicans only run House of Representatives.

Uhh, Cantor, did you forget that your majority held House is the one that passes those spending bills? Or are you hoping that the stupid Tea-Nuts will just bob and nod and agree with you?

This seems fair, which means it will never happen

How about Cantor, Tan Man Boehner, and all other politicians against health care reform should lose their tax payer funded health care for themselves and their families.

For the past 4 mornings

The cockatoos have been in my front yard, mostly taking turns at the birdbath.

So, this morning I am ready. Camera, SD card, long lens, test shot to make sure the shutter speed/aperture/iso/white balance are all good.

Well, I can hear them in the distance.

RWNJs claim Closed Captioning for the Hearing Impaired is Evil Obama Admin Plot

I'm not joking.

This what happens when Tea-hadists, and neocons are the ones that keep getting the spotlight and airtime. These are the ones running rampant, so they end up being the poster children for the Conservative Party.

Conservatives don't like it, too bad, suck it up, princesses, you brought it on yourselves by sitting back, and leaving such as these to be glowing examples of "Conservatives" by groveling and swooning over that dipshit Palin as if every word she says is gospel from on high, applauding stupidity like "2nd amendment remedies" from Angle, and other priceless gems like this to be the ones spearheading for you.

Closed Captioning during a live speech isn't a script, it's some person in a booth typing as fast as he or she can to keep up with the dialog and action. It's too bad the Tea-Tards of Sodahead can't figure that out for themselves... but then they do prefer to invent drama where there isnt' any.

My opinion of Palin from the get go, and now

She was a nobody who McCain mistakenly thought all the women voters who had supported Hilary Clinton would flock over to his camp. Almost "Look! I have a vagina on my team! Vote for me!"

And now like the smell of cat pee on a rug, she just will NOT go away.

As posted earlier

the EFS 18-200's lens creep was just too pronounced, so we brought the lens back to Camera Electronic Services for a store credit, and to re-order another to replace it.

When I told them I had planned to use that lens during this Saturday's photography lesson, they let me 'rent' one (borrow it, really) until next week.

This has definitely earned them return customers.

Had to take it back

The Canon EFs 18-200. We ended up bringing it back. The lens creep was too severe. I turned quickly to take a photo, and the thing just extended out with a THUNK noise. We did get a store credit, though, and have ordered another lens for me.

Hypocrisy at its finest?

From FAUX Noise : Palin "We must condemn violence if our republic is to endure."

Yes, she had the unmitigated gall to say this after all her gun jargon ("retreat and reload" being one of them) , a map with gun-sights on Democratic Party held districts and all her other 'gun' imagery she, and her drooling fans, so love. Don't like the term drooling? Too bad, you should read some of the forums where men and women are almost having 'private moments' in their descriptions of Palin and her guns and gun commentary.

She, on one hand, advocates violence (as does many of the Tea-hadists) and now tries her typical routine of fluttering her eyelashes, and playing dumb? Methinks it's not playing.

Why is this dip-shit getting air time?

Typing of Dip-shit and air time, FAUX Noise. I didn't keep a running tally of how many of their 'guests', and some of their own talking heads, have used gun or violence rhetoric for their way of 'solving' their disputes. Jokes about killing President Obama. Flat out advocating death to those who oppose them.

Then they have the gall to polish up that yellow dinner plate, hold it above their heads as if it's a halo saying they are against violence when everything they have been doing and saying for the past 2+ years has been just short of sending subliminal messages on top of their blatant messages, that if you don't get your way, resorting to acts of violence is the way to go.

Last year at almost this exact same date, Wing and I took his mother out shopping for an air conditioner, either evaporative, or reverse cycle, portable for one room.

She once again had us take her from one store to another, and another and another, only to not make up her mind yet again. Wing says she's fussy. I told her we should just get her one, because 'free' beats fussy every time.

I just such nerd

After a reboot last night, my upper screen resolutions vanished. I went through the hunt for reasons why (driver, up to date, proper cable etc) and I even updated the BIOS, to no avail.

So, I did it the round about way. Went into the Intel Graphics menu, and created a custom resolution profile. Windows complains about it (but it used to be the recommended resolution before the mysterious vanishing) but it works just fine.

Nerdz Rool.

Tired, but in a good way

Wing and I both attended the "Intermediate" workshop at "Teach Me Photography". It's a bit pricey, but dayam, Greg is a great teacher. We traipsed around Hyde Park (Perth, not England) for two hours, after a show and tell about aperture priority. For me it was a refresher, but for Wing it was just what he needed to advance.

I did manage, of course, to take some photographs for myself outside the lesson plan.

Oh Boo Hoo

The big retailers are whining about losing sales to online sellers, and want to slap GST on all overseas purchases. 10%. Funny thing is, even with a 10% GST fee (which was supposed to REPLACE the tax system, but instead got added on top) it's still cheaper even with the shipping charges, to buy overseas or online.

Instead of having a hissy-fit that informed consumers shop around for the best bargains, how about stop gouging the consumer?

Oh, just on an aside: most of the retailers who were pouting? I don't shop there anyhow. You're excuses for hitting me with a 10% fee just do not apply.
