The day so far

Up early for a few reasons. Loki's internal alarm went off early, and had to get up shortly thereafter for Project: Pergola. Mananged not to stumble around too much. Go me.

Took all the camera kit out from trip to The Pinnacles, and cleaned it. Good thing for UV filters over the lenses. They had dings and scratches from the wind blown sand, but the lenses themselves are fine. Wing had to take his camera into the shop, as there was lots of visible dust and dirt on the sensor. All fixed now.

Sorted out some photos on the SD card. Tried out the Soft Box for the external flash, and it made one helluva difference. Ziggy, our ever patient (at times) model shows the even lighting without the harsh shadows and hard glare highlights.

Been chronicling the pergola repairs. It's coming along fine. Ziggy is most put out that her playground (cat enclosure) is currently offline, so I stood at one side of the yard, and Alan stood at the other side. Then I opened the back door. Loki came out, and then Ziggy did. She started caterwauling and yowling. Loki jogged over to see what her problem was, and she darted back into the house. At least she was placated. Will do it again this afternoon when the Mark quits for the day.

A blast from the musical past

I have been feeling very nostalgic lately, and my choices of music to listen to are are a clear reflection of that nostalgia.

This is the tiny box Loki kept trying to squeeze himself into

And he keeps trying.

Project: Pergola

Rotted gutters have been replaced, holes for cement have been dug. Have a huge pile of jarrah that has already been claimed for someone's woodstove. :D

Loki gave me a couple of laughs today.

1: He didn't come in before Mark arrived, although I tried to coax him in. Mark went to lunch and then I had a YOWLING and POUNDING AT THE DOOR cat wanting to come in NOW!

and

2: then he tried to climb into a really really skinny box.

Wing and I believe he thinks he is still itty bitty kitty with snowshoe sized paws. :)

Project:Pergola, Day One

Mark and his work crew came by today to demolish the rotting pergola. It was worse than originally suspected. The posts were not, as Wing was told when he bought the house, cemented. They had metal 'shoes' bolted on them, and then inserted under the bricks, with sand on them. Had that tree that fell last year had hit it sideways rather than straight down, it would have torn the barge board and gutters down. Also, the entire structure came down way too easily for comfort.

Before and after the tear down

We did find another hidden bit of damage. The gutters along the back of the house are rusted/rotted through. Easily enough fixed. Mark took a section that wasn't too badly rotted to

Let me splain.. no, will take too long, let me sum up.

I keep getting strong suggestions that I so something professional with my photography. I get this a lot, and get rave reviews of my work. I have had a about (not counting my own purchases of calendars or t-shirts) 280 photo sales. Sounds like a lot, but it's not a lot coming my way. (I get about 30% of total sale price, the rest goes to the hosting site for manufacturing and shipping)

Biggest problem I face (and Wing and I were served this in spades at a photographers get together a while back) is because I don't have letters attached to the front or back of my name indicating degrees.. well, lets just say Wing and I could have gotten frostbite from some of the attendees when they discovered we weren't 'professionals'. or didn't have a degree in Photography/Arts.

For your viewing pleasure, a professional quality photo, taken by an unlettered person. Enjoy.

Photographers at the Pinnacles: You don't always need a warm body for a portrait! :D

Taken shortly after dawn, giving the entire area a golden hue, and stark shadows.

Ready.. aim.. no fire

All the bits and pieces for the Pergola Project are stacked in the carport. Alan and I have been shifting the potted plants, the planters with herbs have been shifted to next to the fence.

I have three piles of leaves and yard debris. Wing and Alan can get it in wheelbarrow and use it as ground cover out front.

I also have my last time in the pool for this summer. Tomorrow, it gets drained in preparation for Mark coming on Sunday to dismantled and haul away the rotting pergola. Cats are gonna freak the hell out.

Thought I would share this:

There were two young men just kicking back atop of one of the hills at the Pinnacles. I dubbed them our "Living Elements" and we took a few photos of them.

I emailed copies of two of the best photos of them. This is the reply I got

Hi Sandra,

Thanks very much. I am really glad you came and took these photos - they will serve as excellent memories that we couldn't have captured on our own! I really like the one of us walking away.

Good luck with the photography.

Michael.

Zoo trip

Might have been too hot of a day but did manage to get a few photos of critters. Lion, Lioness, some meerkats, and had a go at taking photos in the nocturnal house. yes, they are grainiy, but they are for me. Was amazing how many times we had to remind 'adults' to not use flash on their cameras and to speak softly while in the Nocturnal House. You would think the signs "Please do not use camera flash" and the "Shhhh, if you speak quietly, you will see the animals" would have been a big clue.

Came home, stripped out of Zoo clothes, got into swim suit, and into the pool. Nice way to cool down. Have to cook dinner, and right now, I am exhausted. Must find something easy.

Planning

Wing and I have a photo-shoot trip to the Pinnacles during the full moon, for some really specky photography. This should be great. Will be borrowing some light sabers from Kae-Dash . Should make for interesting light trails and loops.

And tomorrow, I am heading to Perth Zoo. Will probably just bring the 18-250, and maybe the wide angle lens too. Now, it's which camera! 40D or 550D?

Finally got the last of the necessary paperwork to get the pergola replaced. We don't have building permit yet, but technically, we haven't scheduled anything to be built yet. We do have a large skip scheduled to be delivered to begin the disassembly of the old rotted one for disposal in two weeks, and the following week, the materials to build it will be delivered. Then the fun begins.

Thursday, March 17, 2011

Idiot fundies and their 'end of days' or 'divine retribution' read this and learn for a change

"Divine Retribution' is the last bastion for those who choose to stay deliberately ignorant. Pat Robertson is an ass with delusions of grandeur.

Haiti Earthquake: plate tectonics. Sooner or later, it was bound to happen.

Hurricanes, including Katrina: it's called the Hurricane Season for a reason. If certain budget cuts hadn't been done by the Bush Administration, the levees wouldn't have failed.

Sept 11: a good argument as to why religion should be abolished. For the sake of 'religion', one spoiled and pissed off Saudi convinced a few mentally unbalanced to kill themselves and take thousands with them. Could have been much much worse.

Civil War: Just about every nation has had one in their history. Sometimes more than one. Nothing 'divine' about it.

The Holocaust: A megalomaniac leader who wanted someone to blame all his failures decided to target an ethnic group. This is happening even now, with the crap going in Europe with 'ethnic cleansing', and in parts of Asia and Africa with genocide. Again, nothing divine, but shit driven by madmen.

The biblical flood was about the Euphrates river flooding, not a global flood. For those who choose to stay deliberately ignorant, the reason you can find seashells on tops of mountains, because those mountains used to be at sea level or below. Read about 'plate tectonics' as with the Haiti Earthquake.

Now, I know most fundies will dismiss logic in favor of a book of bronze age fables stolen from even older cultures, but thank you for showing us what delusional means.

WANT!

WANT!!!

Tuesday, March 15, 2011

Dear Melville Council

To say "You Suck" would be an insult to sucking.

We jump through all your hoops to submit the specs for replacing the falling apart pergola (make note, falling apart, not adding more onto the house, replacing damaged), fine. But then when we submit the paperwork to you for the job, you tell us we need to submit a requisition form to get the site plans from you, so we can submit them to you again?

Are you f&$%&$@ DAFT??!! Get off your lazy asses, go back into your file room, or just do a computer search, but no. That would be too frelling/fracking simple. You want us to do your job for you, and pay for the privilege of getting you off your over paid ass, get a already scanned to your computer filing system site plans , and then wait for to 4 to 6 weeks while you get around to mailing it to us.

Screw you, we will have the plans drawn up,two copies. You can go 'know thyself'.

Sometimes, updates/upgrades just aren't worth it

I decided to give Firefox RC4.0 a tryout. I expected the GUI to be a bit confusing at the outset, but figured it out fairly quick.  Wasn't all that wowed about the revamped toolbars, or it's attempt to mimic Chrome appearance. I will say it did launch much faster than FF v3. But I think part of that speed is because of what I am going to comment about next.

FF RC4 tanked many of my tried and true addons. With FF v2x to 3x, there was this addon that allowed you to make your addons compatible with updated versions. They have done away with this. Bad move, as some of these addons have no updates, but work fine in v3.1x.x.

Luckily for me.. strike that. Smartly for me, I used Mozbackup to make a full back up of Firefox before trying RC4. I have since restored it to it's quite functional and useful self.

So yes, if you are installing it fresh vanilla, no addons, you'll love it. But for me, it borked too many of my addons and the new features didn't make up for that loss enough for me to switch over.

Spent 3 hrs at a photo workshop today. It really helped Wing cement some of what he has already learned, and confirmed what I already knew. I really don't mind a refresher course.

Part of the workshop was to go up to people and ask to take their photo, and why. Everyone I asked was fine with it. Got their email addresses and sent them copies of their portraits.

What a weekend

A friends big Five Oh, and then we went to see a lovely lady, Mrs T. :) She is such good company, any time with her is great.

Then Wing and I went to the Sculpture By the Sea at Cottesloe Beach. Amazing works there. What annoyed me is that even with the very obvious DO NOT TOUCH PLEASE signs, there were adults doing just that. There was one sculpture where I saw a woman try to bend part of it to see what it was made from. I said "Umm the sign says DO NOT TOUCH.. probably because the thing is fragile." She harumphed at me, but left it alone.

Surprizingly, Wing was.. irked that I spoke up. I then quoted the line that Mrs T said to us earlier the same day. "If you stand by and watch something wrong being done, you are just as guilty as the wrong-doer."

This was the sculpture being pawed, and no, it wasn't any of the people in the photo doing so.

Bertie and Archimedes are fine. Chances are the kites feet are sore from being bitten. h.t. To Alan for spotting the reason for the ruckus. I dashed out with the lens I had on the camera, didn't really have time to change it.

A bit more

Earlier this week, Wing and I went to Dr Sketchy's Anti Art show, where we were allowed to photograph the burlesque dancer/model. I took about 100 photos. Discounting duplicates, there are about 20 that came out fan-freaking-tastic. Because of her costuming, I ended up making them look 'vintage'.

I emailed the dancer, by request, asked her if I could have her permission to post the photos on my commercial RedBubble site.

This was reply:

Hi Sandra

I would love to see them before posting them if thats possible? Also, if
you are to put them on redbubble to sell, am I able to use them to with
your permission and credit?

Thanks

M*****

I sent her copies, telling her she most certainly had my permission to use them, as long as I get photo credit , and this was her reply.

Wow Sandra

These are so beautiful!! Thanks so much. I cant wait to put them on my
facebook. Ill certainly credit you. Do you have a website that you want
me to mention?

M*****

Here's one of them

Just found out ...

I can port my old MobiPocket ebooks into Kindle app on my Android tablet. This is good, as I couldn't read them as I was having trouble reading on small screen.

Customizing my Android Tablet

There are a few things any Android user is aware of. Limited screen space for shortcuts. I got a nifty app Launch X Pro, made 5 widgets that can be scrolled through. I could have made just one, but for now, the 5 categories work fine.

Also, I found it a bit annoying that the Launcher for my Suli didn't allow for launch screen rotation. It's capable of it, as all the programs/apps rotate. Even the crappy ePad did that much. Easily enough fixed. I tried ADW.Launcher. It worked, but it was a memory hog. Uninstalled it and tried Zeam instead. Much smaller footprint and memory use is much less, too.

Also, the Kindle App for android issue: the support guy for Kindle has tried to say that because the Kindle App wasn't preinstalled, that is why I have problems with some ebooks. Have found out that other people who have Android phones or tablets without it preinstalled aren't having this problem, but it's a known issue. But since it affects only a small percentage of Android Users, they aren't going to bother trying to fix it.

Fine, I will just keep 'convincing' the e-books I buy to play nice. It's not something I want to do, but more like painted into a corner to do so.

Amazon/Kindle slides down a notch in the respect department

I have been running into an issue when getting ebooks for Kindle App on my tablet. Many times, I will get "Invalid Item: remove from device and redownload from archives", and when I do this, I get the same Invalid message, the same .. well, you get it. Round and round.

I asked for Kindle support to call me. After deleting the app, then reinstalling it (yes, did this before too) and still getting the same error message, I am informed it's because Kindle didn't come preinstalled on the device.

Huh? That excuse just doesn't wash! Kindle App didn't come preinstalled on my desktop, or netbook, or laptop, and guess what? I don't get this error message! Why do some boosk open without a hitch, but some puke up the above error message?

So, Kindle/Amazon, stop trying to fix the blame and fix the damned problem!
