Home Sweet Home
With nothing to do but three loads of laundry, and to placate three YOU ABANDONED US! LEFT US ALONG FOREVER.... AGAIN! cats.
The company shindig was a lot of fun. Wing works with a great group of people. We didn't have to spend the entire time in their company, so we did some sort of tourist things.
Got up at 5am to go to Sugarloaf Rock before sunrise, so we could get some photographs of it as the sun light was crawling down it. Amazing sight. Also went to a light house, where I not only climbed up the spiral stairs along the inside wall, but actually went outside on the walkway around the 'lamp'. This might not seem too big a deal until I mention this: I have vertigo, and I could see through the stairs to the floor below when going up. I was smart enough to not look straight down the side of the lighthouse, but look outward. It was a magnificent view (have photos, will post them later).
Wing is cooking dinner tonight. Me? I'm the one doing the laundry and (looking down at front of fur coated shirt) placating the cats. heh.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Clause
Or in this case, a ray of sunshine.
Restored the back up dates May 1st, 2011. Considering the computer was picked up on May 11th, the data loss was mitigated. Thank goodness my nerd self is set up to do automatic disc image back ups.
It worked.
I have to install some updates, but all seems to be functioning without the machine trying to self destruct.
(paused for phone call)
Acer just called, and you could pretty much dust my ass for lip prints. They are not only extending my warranty (again) they are sending me bribes errr hardware.
I'm still going to have a computer built, and probably shelve this one, or make it a back up system. Sad thing is, when this machine is running right, it's great. But 5 services in 18 months? Not so great.

Took a chance
I unboxed the Lemon err Acer and booted it up. Reason is that some of the photo software I have (kudos to the makers of it, once I explained what happened, they put my activations to 0/2, so I can reinstall if I have to) just bogs down my poor faithful laptop to the point of it being unresponsive.
So, plugged in wireless USB keyboard/mouse, and started it up. back to the fugly Acer default desktop. I decided to check the D drive, where the majority of data was stored.
My jaw almost hit the desk. It was still intact. I started up the "restore Windows from disk image" but canceled. I am backing up the data on the D drive first. All the tech forums say I don't have to, but at this point, I'm not taking any chances.
The image I have is dated May 1st 2011. That is just 10 days before they picked up my machine to "only apply thermal paste".
Do these fortuitous events absolve them of performing an unnecessary disk wipe on my computer, and lying about informing me they were going to do so, or the fact that computer is a lemon? Hell no. But until DiscWorld builds me one, I will use it.

Check list
One formal letter of complaint, laying out the entire history of the Z5601, and how Acer "help desk" was as much help as a sponge in a flood: check
5 PDFs of documented proof of said 'help': check.
Printing out three copies of each: check.
Have business sized envelopes for mailing to two different parties, keeping one copy of everything at home: check.
Waiting to hear back from our bank about the credit card purchase of said Lemon of a computer: check.
All that is left is the waiting.

My letter to Acer Customer Care part two
I have contacted DiscWorld, where this Acer Fiasco started with me ordering it and then Acer sending the low end model, instead of the quad core duo I had ordered, then jerking me around for months before I resolved it by getting refund from DiscWorld, going to Harvey Norman and getting the Quad Core Duo version. Who would have guessed I would have gotten one with a faulty chipset on the video card that would result is the screen going grey and the computer needing a hard reboot. (Diagnosed by ATi Radeon). Didn't know that at the time, but sent my computer to Sydney to be fixed. It was sent back with a disc wipe, and nothing done. Not only that, the USB Ports on the left side no longer worked. 2 days after setting it up, I got another Grey Screen Of Death. I called Customer Care. It was arranged for JH Computer Services in Perth to come pick up the computer and have it fixed. But you neglected to send the USB port card. It was finally sent after about 2 months. JH Services picked up computer, fixed it, brought it back, set it up, and all was well... for a while.
Then it started overheating. I submitted a support ticket (after noting all previous support tickets and info vanished due to new site design, but I had used FireFox ScrapBook to save every support/repair ticket, from beginning to end). The end result is a work order that sounds like it belonged to the 1st problem I was having with the GSOD, not the overheating problem. I was told in the support tickets that what was needed was reapplication of Thermal paste ONLY. No hardware swap, no HDD wipe.
So, I have called DiscWorld and have asked for a quote for a small footprint Quad Core duo i7, with 8 gigs DDR3 (second generation) with a 23 inch monitor etc. I will be contacting my Credit Card company, to see if there is any protection for me for having purchased a lemon that you/your company has been less then stellar in resolving. My bet is the computer from DiscWorld will cost much less than the $3000 I spent on the Z5610. Even if ******** Mastercard can't help, fine. I will still be getting a computer from DiscWorld as we have two of them here, older than the Aspire Z5610 which have never and any issues at all. So much for Name Brand reliability.

Now that I have calmed down a bit
My letter to Acer 'Consumer Care' (yeah, right)
Although I did call, and spoke at length with someone at Acer Customer Care,I have long learned it never happened unless it was put in writing, so here goes.
Original Case Number: 070511-24: My computer was overheating. I was told it needed new application of Thermal Paste. I wasn't told that anything else would be done to my system, so I agreed to box my computer up and send it to Sydney, even though your Sydney repair center has had a very poor track record with fixing my computer.
I got it back, and read the work order. It was wrong. My system was not unstable, it was perfectly stable, but it kept overheating. Yes, it would automatically shut down, as that is a safety feature to prevent hardware damage. What it didn't need was being reset to factory default. I was in a state of severe agitation about this because had I been told told, I would have made a full disc image back up before agreeing to ship it you your less than reliable repair center. The data loss I suffered is immeasurable.
The work order also said that components were missing. I was distinctly told to not include mouse, keyboard or power cord. Those were the only parts I didn't send along. The work order also states the video card was damaged. It was working when it left. I suggest you read previous case as to how the courier handled the computer upon pick up.
I'm a bit worried about 'installed components originally missing from factory default build. Does this mean I will be having the GREY SCREEN OF DEATh again from a faulty chipset on the video card? (the reason my computer was 1st sent to Acer Repair, and came back without the video card replace and with the USB ports on left side of machine no longer working)
I am upset about the harddrive wipe. No, I wasn't informed this would be protocol, and I don't give a flying fig if it's ticked on the form. You go look at the previous support ticket, nothing was mentioned, and I dare you try to find recorded conversation of me agreeing to it, because it doesn't exist. I used to work in the IT field, computer repairs, and let me tell you I am disgusted with how this has been handled. We never would have wiped a customers HD without getting permission in writing (email counts as writing). With how the consumer market is, I would have thought Acer would have upped their game. This computer has been a lemon from day one. It has spent more time non functioning, being wiped, having to have software reinstalled, wiped again, repeat three times, than it has been used. I have spent over $10,000 on Acer computers in the past 5 years. Might be a drop in the corporate bucket, but you know with the advent of blogs and twitter, this sort of poor customer service, and bad products becomes well knows. I am looking to have a quad custom built instead of using this boat anchor called Acer Aspire Z5610. I remember when Acers were top of the line. Now, more like bottom of the dung heap, or skip bin, where the this Z5610 is destined for

Take deep breath, count to 100, repeat because necessary
My Acer computer was returned today. Now, remember, all that was needed was a reapplication of thermal paste. I even have the correspondence between Acer Help Desk (a misnomer if I ever read/heard of). I tell them the computer will overheat and auto shutdown. That's all.
All he says that will be done to my computer is to have thermal paste reapplied.
(take deep breaths again, count to 100)
I get my computer back, and I read the work order.
"System is highly unstable" (whohuhwha...? It was overheating, not unstable. The OS and programs were running just fine!)
"System is shutting down automatically" (ok, that much is right. Computer will shut down automatically to prevent damage from overheating)
Repair Team have identified the following:
We have performed the following actions:
You see, the reason this has me fuming, is that had I been told the morons at Acer Repair were going to wipe the drive, I would have made a full disc image to restore on that day. According to the woman I spoke to, the moron claims that he told me the HD would be wiped, to which I replied "That is a lie. Had he told me, I would have made a full system image back up. I dared her to find any telephone recording between him and me where I agree to the HD wipe. There isn't one. Also, there isn't anything mentioned in the support ticket that this was going to be done.
So yes, I am angry. I was so angry and upset, I had an asthma episode. Luckily, puffer was at hand.
So, Acer, f**k you and the horse you rode in on. It will be Sony or a custom built one from DiscWorld.

Repair Team have identified the following:
- Miscellaneous part(s) found to be missing (I was told to NOT send mouse, keyboard or power cord, so clueless about this)
- Video card was found to be physically damaged (was in working order when it left. See above attachment about my complaint how courier handled box)
- Operating system needs to be reloaded to factory default settings (WHAT THE F**K!!?? NO! Nothing was wrong with the OS. If anything, it was perfectly stable and up to date! Leave it alone!)
We have performed the following actions:
- Installed component(s) originally missing from factory default build (does this mean I will be getting GSOD again?)
- Replaced faulty Add-on Cards/Boards (huh? All was working when it left here)

Well, wasn't that a let down
No earth shattering kaboom, no colossal earth quake, not even a horrible storm sweeping over planet. Jeeze, I had my camera ready, just waiting to take photos of people flying upwards, arms outstretched. Not even one guy with premature exultation!
Wonder what the fundie's excuse will be for being wrong, yet again. Let me see.. what book from the bronze age is he going to say he didn't read, or didn't translate properly? I saw we all pitch in a penny and get him a MAGIC 8 BALL.

In honor of the Yet again not the end of the world.
BACKWARD CHRISTIAN SOLDIERS
(Tune: fairly obvious really, no? Google "Onward Christian Soldiers")
Backward, Christian soldiers,
Backward from my door.
Take your sales pitch elsewhere,
Trouble me no more.
Christ and Hare Krishna,
Also Joseph Smith--
These are merely archetypes
From the realm of myth.
CHORUS
Backward, Christian soldiers,
Backward from my door.
Take your sales pitch elsewhere,
Trouble me no more.
Come no more with leaflets (<--- I particularly like this verse.)
In your outstretched mitt:
Biblical quotations
Neatly trimmed to fit.
Nineteen fourteen was the date
Everything would end.
Now with every passing decade
See the schedule bend.
CHORUS
Tell me, Christian soldier,
Do they pay you well?
Serving God and Mammon,
Saving us from hell?
Do they buy your raincoats?
Do they pay your fare?
Do they buy you fancy cars
To get you here from there?
CHORUS
"Talk about the Bible"?
Oh indeed, let's do.
Many things confuse me:
Do they bug you too?
If the children mock me
For my lack of hairs,
Should I, like Elisha, have them
Eaten up by bears?
CHORUS
When the mob confronts me,
Thus I save my head:
"Here are my young daughters,
Gangbang them instead."
If my foe commands me,
"Tote my bags one mile,"
Two miles should I carry them?
Would that make him smile?
CHORUS
Maybe I've been hasty.
Won't you come inside?
Step around the circle.
'Scuse my naked hide.
Make yourselves quite comfy.
Have a cup of tea:
If it makes you sleepy,
Close your eyes, feel free.
CHORUS
Valiant Christian soldiers,
Stalwarts who believe,
What a double sacrifice
For our Hallows Eve!

Had a deluge first thing this morning. I went out to bring the birds under the pergola only to see water pouring over the bedroom window. Turns out it was on the inside of the window. I toss a box of books onto the bed, preventing them from getting soaked. Just the bottom of the box was wet, books fine. I tell Wing to bring me a towel. He brings me the smallest one in the bathroom. I raised my voice. "Get me a damned towel!" expecting him to get me the thick terry cloth bath sheet.. again a small towel! I push past him, grab my terry cloth bathrobe and shove it onto the windowsill, staunching the flow, and soaking up what was there.
I managed to get a few photos of the streaming water, and sent them to Mark at Hire a Hubby. He came right over, weather be damned! Turned out that one of the downpipes, even though it looked ok from the top, it was rotted underneath, so any water going in there was just flooding under the eaves. It's been fixed. Chances are we will be replacing other downpipes en masse so we don't have to do it piecemeal. They are 25+ yrs old, and have served well.
Water also came into the guest bathroom, and the gyprock is sagging. That repair we can claim back on homeowners insurance.

So, Phreaky Freddy Phelps and his cult of nutjobs
Are now saying the flooding in Australia is "God's Punishment" because Australia is a nation of "Fags" and their "God" hates fags.
I have never seen such a prime example of group psychosis, infectious hatred, as there is with Freaky Freddy and his wacky bred to be his congregation family. The blackness in their hearts and souls is almost painful to watch.
News flash, Phelps Klan: you aren't "Christians" in any way, shape or form. You're barely human. I don't hate you, you don't affect me or my life. I might pity you though, because being this hateful is probably eating you and your family inside. Do the world a favor, and just go away.

Release form filled out
I was contacted by "CHEEZEBURGER". They want to use a photo I took of Loki for their 4th book.
This one:
I was able to find the original sized of the cropped down photo. 2000x1951, as I cropped off the closet and bathroom door. Can't find the original unedited photo yet. I only have 300gigs of photos, about half of those still with their original 'camera' names (P10000.JPG, P10001.JPG etc). Only the final edits were given distinct easy to find names. At least I have them filed under descriptive folder names, but it's the card dumps done to clear them quickly that are giving me the headache.

Finally rooted my Android tablet
(waits for the giggles from all friends on list from Oz to stop)
Worked flawlessly, used Titanium Back Up pro to make full image back up, apps and hidden system files, and OEM rom. The rooting tool has been removed from Android market very recently (I mean like within a day, maybe two days) but it's still available.
Next step, flash the rom with updated Android OS. Might not be able to get apps from Samsung market anymore, but I already looked through it. Nothing there I that I can't find on Google Android Market.

A gift
Wing was staying with his mother the day she had her cataract surgery. He started processing photos on his laptop. She noticed and went rummaging around, and presented Wing with this beauty.
A Yashica Electro 35 GS in perfect condition.
It belonged to Wing's father, so it has special meaning to him.
Had to do a bit of web trawling to find a battery for it, because it used to take a mercury battery and those are no longer made (toxic). Managed to locate and order a battery adapter. Should get here in a couple of weeks, then off to our favorite camera shop and get some Fuji film! :D

That was cutting it a bit close
I was told by Acer (Non) support that my boxed up computer would be picked up between 9 to 5. Seeing my track history with deliveries here I pretty much camped out in the lounge, with the window open, waiting. Only daring to take quick 'comfort breaks'.
At 4:37 pm he finally showed up. I'm more than a little annoyed.

Alan may never help me cook dinner again
Decided on garlic shrimp (prawns), spinach fettuccine and tomatoes, with parsley and pepper for dinner. Alan was helping to get things out of low areas. He was also helping me with garlic cloves.
He was separating them from the bulb. Then I would snick the ends off, give it a good whack on the counter, and easily remove the skin from the clove.
One of the cloves I smashed, decided to go squirting across the room instead of just squashing flat. I don't know the exact area in the kitchen, but as the laws of the universe would have it, the errant clove shot across the room, and with all that wide open space in the kitchen, it hit Alan in the groin. He folded.
I know I shouldn't laugh... but *snrk*

All boxed up
Desktop is in a shipping carton, have the shipping label and manifest printed out.
I did try to convince Acer Support to let JH Services in Perth to do the reapplication of thermal paste. He told me that the All in Ones are tricky to fix. I pointed out that JHS didn't have a problem fixing the GSOD problem, and had it back to me in just 5 days!
No joy. I have no faith in the Sydney repair center, seeing as not only didn't they fix the video problem, they returned my computer in worse condition than it was when I sent it to them and it took two weeks.
It has been strongly suggested, seeing that I have another 2 yrs warranty on this computer, that if there is another problem, just demand a refund, and get a different computer. As much as I like the Z6510 when it's working properly, I am getting fed up with Acer support/repair and the niggling problems that keep cropping up.

yes, I know this isn't politically correct, but I don't care
The Taliban is saying OBL is a martyr. Ah, gotta love the Taliban's spin. A cowardly murderer, someone who got other weak minded men to commit suicide and to do his dirty work instead of doing it himself (which he would have if his cause was so righteous).
Bin Laden RAN, or tried to, even shoving women in the way of the US soldiers. Many people are going on about OBL not being armed... neither were the civilians working in the WTC, or the Pentagon, or on any of those 4 flights. Only difference is, none of the people in the WTC, Pentagon, or those 4 flights planned and murdered 3000+ people. I don't celebrate any human being's death, but I do breathe a huge sigh of relief that Al Qaeda's sugar daddy is dead, and that the US force got all that intel on harddrives, and paper. Clean the vermin out.

I see no need for my computer to go to Sydney
Acer Support (?) said yes, the reapplication of thermal paste is covered by warranty (funny how they changed their mind when I showed proof positive that I have 2.5 yrs of extended warranty on top of the standard 12 months) but are saying it has to go to Sydney.
The last time I sent it to Sydney, not only wasn't the problem fixed, but it was returned in worse condition (USB ports no longer functioned). I want it to go to JH Computer Services, right here in the neighborhood, the "Authorised Acer Repair Centre". The claim of "It needs to go to Sydney because the All in Ones are tricky to fix" doesn't ring true, as it wasn't fixed in Sydney, and was fixed here in Perth! And it didn't take a 2 week turn around either!
I have prettied up the above sentiment, and sent that to Acer Support (?). Let's see what they have to say. I have my acer laptop and external monitor at the ready, regardless.

Acer support, you're sneaky bastards, but I'm even sneakier
My all in one desktop has been having overheating problems lately. Even with two small USB fans running to cool it off, it would overheat and shut down (overheating really an issue on sites with flash) So, I surfed on over to the Acer Support page.
Hmmm,. nifty new design. Ok, so I click on login and input my info.. "Unknown user/Wrong password or account may be disabled". Ooooh kay. Double check my login info and try again. Same thing. I request password reset. Waited two days. Nada.
So, just for shits and giggles, I make a 'new' account, and funnily enough my user info is accepted. Should have been told "User email already on record" or something like that. It didn't. That means all the support history, tech problems, and total screw up Acer kept doing about my Z6510 is gone... Not.
You see, this is where I'm even sneakier. I used "Scrapbook" to capture each and every page of support/repair requests. Even their rude replies.
Acer Support, you might be sneaky bastards, but I am a tech savvy bitch who tends to be a docu-rat.
The good news I submitted my problem, and it was answered very quickly. Just waiting to hear back if the fix is covered by my warranty.

Wing was known as "Roo" in the US. And the date of my arrival wasn't planned, but I never let a good pun slip by.
So, "May the Fourth Be With Roo!

Light Play - Photography Workshop
Wing and I attended a photography workshop, "Lightplay"
It was amazing. It helped me with mentally converting film camera usage to digital. I caught on quick, and out of the 200 photos taken, 123 of them are keepers. I will have to go through them and delete ones that are similar or duplicates from getting a burst of photos.
I was exhausted the next day, and still a bit tired today (not to mention my knee giving me grief for what I put it through), but I would do it all again in a nano second.

5 days post Con
And still tired, but not zombie tired.
Had to take Ziggy into the vet for final recheck on her eye. It's all better. The weeping of the other eye has been deemed allergy related. Vet said many cats have allergy problems this time of year (and around Springtime too). Ziggy isn't too happy with us right now, but am sure she will get over it.
Went pillaging. We noticed the prices of fresh veggies have creeped up. Not a lot, but when you get as many fresh ones as we do, the increase adds up.
Alan came back from his B-day vacation in Margaret River. As much fun as he had, he was glad to be back. Something about those fresh veggies. He said the junkfood diet of his friend made him feel rather ick after the first few days. No wonder he was IMing and texting me on how to cook certain things.
Tomorrow we have an early morning photo workshop. It's an all day shoot. Have backpack on the trolley. Should make it a lot easier than the Pinnacles trip, as I won't be lugging 20lbs of camera gear on my back.
Turns out that the instructor of the workshop had a bit of a kitchen disaster. He had tried to make some muffins so all those attending could have a cup of coffee or tea and a muffin. I guess he ended up with hockey pucks. So, I decided to make some muffins. "Apple Pie" muffins. Here they are, not quite done yet:
Wing and I sampled one each, just to make sure they came out ok. ;) Made a dozen for the Workshop.
