Since the March 2008 outbreak of violence in Tibet, China has stepped up its campaign to vilify the Dalai Lama, blaming him for the unrest, which Beijing says was part of a campaign to split the Himalayan region from the rest of China.
It's not the Dalai Lama that is causing the unrest. It's poverty, pollution, villages being destroyed for multi-billion dollar projects, people getting displaced with nothing more than the clothing on their backs. It's the gov't disappearing people, jailing or murdering anyone who dares to speak out.
Yes, The Dalai Lama did, back in 1959, try to free Tibet from the Chinese invasion and attempt of eradication. Who wouldn't? That area is called Tibet, and Himalaya. One would expect the Tibetans and Himalayans want the people trying to erase them to be gone.
