An uneasy peace between Ziggy and Loki

Pet Pic Spam!

Normally, Ziggy likes curling up under this blanket, but today, Loki decided it was a good place to sleep. Ziggy is not happy and glares at him.

Seeing as that didn't work, she decided to try LOOMING over him and glaring up close. Then she tries to use "The Force" to get him to move.

*Grump*... lays down and grumps a bit more.

She tries just one more time to use "The Force" to get him to move, but finally gives up and sleeps too.

They are now both snoring in two part disharmony.

"Booked" my Vox Blog

As I had mentioned, SixApart is shutting down Vox with little warning. Just short of saying "We closing, go here or get lost".

FeedFabrik offered a solution for those who wanted to archive their blogs. And they worked tirelessly with me about bugs and glitches until it was all working right.

I actually found that their site created a PDF that was formatted better than LJ Book or BlogBooker.

I will miss Vox, the groups that were there, and people on my F-lists that have decided to not export to Typepad or WordPress.

Well, I was right

We went to the Perth Royal Show today, and I was right. Aikidomayland pretty much quick marched me through it seeing pretty much just what he wanted to see. (Yes, I admit I'm odd. All the other women were checking out the clothes, jewelry, bling, but I was checking out the tools.)

But we both enjoyed the dressage and show jumper. Got lots of great photographs.

Dressage.

They are enjoying the change of venue

Brought the birds outside. They are abso-fragging-lutely bouncy from the fresh air and sunshine. Bertie, the cockatiel, is back to performing his full repertoire of whistles and singing. I wonder if the neighbors yapping beanie baby of a dog is getting wound up from Bertie doing the "c'mere doggie" whistle, or maybe the Mozart stanza?

Archimedes is climbing all over the cage, hanging upside down, and warbling, squawking and being a noisy little bird. I still think he misses Eileen because he will make this particular call he used to do with her, and then wait for a response. At least with the wild lorikeets around, he has been having good conversations. I know he still misses her, and I do too.

Wine drop reflections in candlelight

I am entering the CanonEOS Photo5 this year. I had applied to submit entries last year, but I ended up with eye problems and had to withdraw.

This is my entry for Brief #1 "Eye Dropper //Close-Up"

Wine Drop Reflections by Candle Light

I like how a mote of dust has distorted the shape of one of the drops, adding a little something to the feel of it.

Now, pardon me while I go do what I usually do when submitting my work to professional judges. Gnaw on my fingernails.

Dear IINET

It's bad enough that we've been paying for grandfathered plans when we would have been entitled to higher capacity at the same cost or lower cost for the same/similar capacity.

Then you do upgrade us, but change the On Peak/Off Peak hours to 1am to 9am from 2am to 12.pm Ok, we got adjusted to that by keeping downloads from 7am to 9am, and then regular websurfing after that.

Then we find out yet again, we are paying for a grandfathered plan, so we update. Only to find out that the off peak hours have been lopped back even more! Now, they are 2am to 8am. Because of this disparity, we have already used almost half of the allotted bandwidth (WoW updates for two computers, Alan setting up a friends new computer, and streaming video) that most would have been done on off peak hours. So, 50% of all our allotted traffic is during the 6 hours everyone is frigging sleeping!

This change of 'peak' hours depending on your broadband plan makes no sense at all! Or if you are going to change the hours, then you should be doing this.

Total traffic 200 gigs. 6 hrs off peak? Fine, then only 50 gigs of that should be off peak, and 150 peak traffic. This crap of putting half of all monthly traffic on 1/4 of the time is a f**king rip off.

/end rant

I have noted..

That the politicians, both in the US and Australia, aren't listening to their constituents.

Have they forgotten their jobs are reliant on those constituents? That they can be voted out of office, or lose the next election?

Case in point:

In the US, over 70% polled want DADT repealed. It's a useless bit of propaganda added to a military spending bill to appease the GOP.

In Australia, 80% of the people polled support voluntary euthanasia for those who are terminally ill, with NO hope in hell of recovery, just a long agonizing lingering death.

Both were voted down by the politicians.

I have higher hopes about politicians getting replaced in Australia, because unlike the US, if you're a UK/Australian citizen living in Australia, you must vote in federal elections.

Personally, after seeing the debacles of people suffering from the "my vote won't matter" attitude in the US, i feel federal elections should have the same rule in the US. Why? Because it would be the real "We The People" electing politicians, not just jazzed up or rabid groups.

I'm trying to be charitable

Either Sen McCain is a liar, or he is senile. According to McCain the military does not seek to see if a military member is gay, that they don't search private emails. It's not the policy and it's just not done. He chanted that over and over during an interview with reporters.

But here is a former Air Force member, Major Mike Almy, whose PRIVATE emails were searched while he was serving in Iraq, and he was discharged him. Major Almy testified about this, and McCain was there during the testimony.

The MILITARY violated the DADT policy by actively seeking to discover if the Major was gay by breaking into his private email account and going through them looking for evidence. Upon reading his emails, he was then unceremoniously discharged for violating DADT when the military was the one who violated it.

So, Sen. McCain is either a liar, or senile.. or maybe deaf.

Gawd I love it

I love watching GOP members who voted NO NO NO NO on the stimulus President Obama passed, standing there taking credit for the businesses, or campaigning at those businesses that were saved because of that Stimulus.

The GOP members that vote no for expanding Veterans' Benefits, then turning around taking credit for it.

Next in the news, the GOP taking credit for.. let's see.. Oh I know, for repealing DADT?

A traipse around King's Park

Aikidomayland has been asking me questions on how to use the FZ50. After some instructions, we went to King's Park. He used the Lumix FZ50, and I was using my precioussssssss errr Canon 550D.

Now he knows why I say little pocket camera is limited in comparison. After getting some great photographs with it he has stated he will be 'taking custody' or kidnapping it.

I got some great shots of the beautiful floral displays. Even made a panorama of one of the flower beds.

We also went there to redo the "Then and Now" of photos taken when Aikidomayland was just a little kid. With the slight overcast, the lighting was perfect, not so glarey like it was last time. Will be making copies of the THEN photos by scanning them, and send them along with the NOWs to the people running the "Do You Remember" there. They asked him on the spot if wanted to donate the photos.

Saw my photography instructor there. He seemed pretty pleased to see one of his former students actually putting his lessons to practical use. Also, I must have looked rather competent because I kept getting asked questions by strangers around there. :)

So tired right now, my eyes are trying to stare at each other. So, g'night peeps!

It might be vanity

Or a waste of money, but I will be having my Vox blog, which is due to vanish into the ether, 'booked'. Working out a few issues with the manufacturer and when those are resolved, will do so.

I have comments and information from friends that I don't want to lose, and photos etc etc.

It's amazing how many regular users at VOX are upset about SixApart lowering the boom on Vox, even though they are offering exports to Typepad. Their reasons are legit, like memorial blogs for friends who have passed away. Issues with some not being able to export to Typepad, getting constant errors. WordPress doesn't have the same options and is a bit clunky to set up (miffed that I can't add my Redbubble widget to Wordpress but I was able to add banner).

Oh well.. life and the net does go on.

I think Alan is onto something

Cooked a wonderful dinner. One of the dishes was egg pasta with mushrooms and a cream sauce.

About 90mins after eating, I was folded over writhing in abdominal pain.

Alan mentioned that the last time something like the happened was with another dish that had milk or cream in it, and chances are I am lactose intolerant because of other health issues.

I think he's right.

I think he's been bitten by the Shutterbug

Aikidomayland got himself a Sony Cybershot, mostly because it's fairly (but not completely) dummy proof.

After a trip to the Melbourne Zoo, and a few other places, he compared the photos he took, with the ones I took with the Canon 550D. He has finally admitted that maybe taking a beginners photography course (using the Lumix FZ50, as I will not give him my preciousssssssss) would be a good thing.

I understand that nothing on the internet is permanent

That being said, there are better ways of handling things.

Example: VOX, yet another SixApart blogging service that many went to when they were mucking up Livejournal (then they abandoned that, and we know what the led to). With little warning (two weeks to be exact, 10days of that I was away) we get notified that they are shutting down. That as of Sept 15th, you could no longer post or edit, but access it. By Sept 30th, it will be going *poof* into the ether.

They do offer yet another SixApart blogging service, but I wonder how long they will keep that one running before they abandon that one too?

Also, they have you go to a place that will make your blog a book, for the tidy sum of $300+ AUD. And no, that isn't a typo. And after looking at the proof, half the images missing, or screwed up, makes me wonder if they are in bed with that service too.

WordPress has stepped up and offered Vox users a place to import their blogs, also, but it's not all peaches and cream. Some one post spammers have already taken the names I typically use blogging, and this was done a few years ago, with no activity since.

Most of the people who were on my friends/neighborhood list on VOX I never personally met, but textually developed friendships, offered advice, was given advice, and just enjoyed gossip.

The way SixApart handled this is piss poor.

Rushing to find

All my fellow Vox refugees before the site goes down, but not everyone has put up an "I moved" link. ARGH!

So for my last entry:

A day in the life

Un-son, Robin offered me a trip into the city (he was taking a family friend too). It felt good to get out and about at a leisurely pace.

Visited "Dick Smith" and got yet again a new set of earbuds. This time will try to hang onto the receipt as they are guaranteed for a year.

Also got the "For Dummies" book for PhotoShop CS5. I have found the "For Dummies" books a bit less... how to put this. When I read the more techie manuals, my brain goes numb, and my eyes glaze over reading the same terms over and over. So, here I am with my highlighter pens, and post-it note tabs at the ready.

And on the slightly sadder front, I went to visit Barra, Un-son, Robin's 15 yr old dog. She is having more and more difficulty getting up and down, and she falls over because her hind legs just can't hold her up, they are so muscle wasted and weak now. Tomorrow she will be taken to the vet for the last time, with her human family around. I remember the first time I bribed her with a huge ham bone almost 10 yrs ago. If I had one today, I would give her one last one.

Sleep well, Barra, you have been a good neighbor, and I'll miss you.

End of a long day

Feeling somewhat less than 'human'. I seem to get tired easily. Probably because I haven't quite gotten over the flu, and then had a hectic week.

A good friend of mine, a regular con goer told me it's going to take at least a week to recover. Funnily enough, I believe her.

Been going through the photographs I took at the con (yes, ShadoutCarver , I have *her* photograph) and am deciding whether to put them in a Facebook Gallery, or LJ Gallery.

A weekend 'off'

Aikidomayland asked if I wanted to go to archery today. He doesn't seem to understand that going at full speed for over a week, I could use some time off for lazy behavior. And seeing as he didn't get up until well after 10am, I feel I am also entitled to a bit of down time.

As much as I enjoyed our 'vacation' in Melbourne, I'm glad to be home. No more running around insane, trying to pack in as much activity in an allotted amount of time.

More new rules at the local pharmacy

Because of a few (proportionally) people abusing Nurofen Plus, or Panadiene, things have changed. Not only have they reduced the size of the packages (I liked not having to get it more than once every few months) but now you can only get one or the other at the same time.

Their reasoning: go to your doctor (shell out $79 for the visit) and then get a prescription (if said doctor feels it's necessary, and let me tell you, it has been my experience that the GPs could give a shit how much pain you are in as long as they don't have to fill out extra paperwork for strong pain medication scripts), which will end up costing well over $100 vs maybe $25.

After my back surgery, I was given a combination of Nurofen Plus and Panadiene. I was told to use as necessary afterward. Who knew I was going to have to tag team pharmacies to follow that.

So, thank you to all the fuqtards that felt cooking down an over the counter medication for addling your brains was a good idea. Should I meet one of you, don't be surprised if a padded cricket bat comes swinging your way.

Walked in last night, trundling big suitcases. Went to the bedroom, and there was Keito and Loki sleeping on the bed. "Hiya Fuzzbutts!"... and Loki slid over on his belly to me, and started purring so hard, I thought he was going to shake his bones loose. Then he proceeded to follow me, 'helping' me unpack the suitcase.

Keito was much more sedate... for about 10 minutes. Then he was in full psychofluff mode. He was positively manic for about 2 hrs.

Last day in Melbourne, and then homeward bound

It's been a lot of fun. Crazy hectic, but good. I have pushed my left leg and myself a lot, and have had some umm 'repercussions' from it, but overall, well worth it.

As luck would have it, the flu/asthma cough has just about gone this morning.

Have made lunches for Aikidomayland and myself. Don't really want to throw away all the stuff we didn't finish. I haven't had a packed lunch like this since grade school. heh

Both Aikidomayland and I feel as if we have packed more than what we packed at home for the trip. There are a few things, but I think we are still within the 23kg (50lbs) weight limit. The only meh thing today is having to lug backpack around. It's a bit heavy, but as long as Aikidomayland doesn't decide to POWERWALK everywhere, I should be ok.

Doing last minute checks to make sure we haven't left anything, and doing tidy ups. It's been nice here, and as much as I am looking forward to going home, I liked the time together with Wing, no cats, no kids, no phone calls.

AussieCon

Today was crazy hectic. Sat in on three panels/discussions that the subject matter was Mars.

Really enjoyed the 'exploits' of David Levine in the Mars habitat in the Utah dessert.  Have pics, but will have to wait until I get home to upload them.  Got to natter with him for a while about the Mars habitat experiment. It was amazing. Yes, I know I read it on his blog, but as well written as those entries were, the glow and pleasure in his voice about it was great to hear. I would bet even money he would do it again, if offered.

At the end of the last panel discussions, but before the Hugo award presentation, we gathered all the attendees that were from W.A.  We filled both sides of the staircase to the 2nd set of stairs up! Will be emailing fredmouse to get a copy of it.  Oh, as a bit of funny: a baby started crying, and I said "Ok, everybody tip your head to the left and say Awwwwwww!", everyone did, and there is a photo of that, too.

Well, that was a letdown

Sat through AussieCon Masquerade. It was... lacking.

Also, the 'judges'... I don't know what was up their butts besides shit, but I exited the room and was disoriented. I looked around to see if Aikidomayland was anywhere nearby. I got snarled at by the 'judges' that I couldn't be there. I explained I was trying to find someone, and was snarled at again to look somewhere else. I admit, I returned their snark by saying "Well excuse me for breathing."

This place is huge and I got disoriented, so would it have been any skin off their noses to give me 15 fucking seconds to get my bearings? Also, the area was not posted as 'off limits', so their comments were, shall we say, out of line.

I'm not one of the masquerade entrants, nor am I a friend or family member of one.

So, not only was the WorldCon masquerade very disappointing, the 'judges' really put a sour note at the end of it.

Totally knackered. Sat in on some very informative, and just flat out interesting panels/discussions.
