The right teacher made all the difference

As I had blogged about before, Aikidomayland took a one day intense class with a 'photography teacher' that was an unmitigated disaster.

I bullied him (yes, bullied) into not giving up and signing up with the photo instructor I had earlier this year. He did, and was wary about going to the point he wasn't really sleeping well.

After he came back from the class with Greg, he was like a happy wriggly puppy. Not only is he re-enthused, he is putting into practice lesson #1.

You see, it wasn't so much he is touchy because of criticism of photography ability levels, but because the MISTAKE was rude, snotty, played favorites, and hadn't a clue as to how to run a class.

But I am just grateful that Aikidomayland is well and truly enthused by something new. First new thing he has had any really get up and go interest in since Pop died.

EUREKA! And not the TV series on SyFy

After many diagnostic tests, removing software, updating chip set drivers, rolling them back, contacting Acer Support, contacting AMD support, a solution has been found!

Turns out that the "GSOD" (grey screen of death) is a well known, well documented problem. I got solution from AMD/ATi, and passed it along to Acer Support.

Guess what? It's a fault with the chipset, and it's a KNOWN ISSUE (got that from S.I. Acer Tech support himself!) with the touch screen all in ones. They could have saved me months of frustration, hours of lost work by just telling me.

So, getting my AcerRacer refitted sooner than I had expected, will get that up and running. Then pack the unit with the buggy chipset back into it's original packaging, contact Acer and have a courier pick it up.

Oh, did I mention it's under warranty, and all of this, except my refitting older laptop with new hard drive, is on their dime?

So, in the process of shifting things from one external hd, to make a disc image back up of the units' drive, in case they have to replace the entire unit. Oh joy.

Fledgling Singing Honeyeater

Kind of took my life in my hands, as the parents, even though I was using telephoto to get in close, kept strafing me.

Taken in my front yard.

Canon EOS 550D
Focal Length 250mm
EF-S55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS
ISO 400
EV +0.33
Exp 1/160 sec at f/5.6

Ok, NO one is that stupid

And making characters on TV shows that oblivious is not only stupid, but insulting.

Regarding Merlin, Season 3:

I mean, seriously, how can all those supposedly intelligent and alert people around Morgana keep missing the evil smiles and glaring from her?

Spotted this lovely in my back yard, right above my clothesline. His mate was just out of sight, but I could hear her. Both of them were enjoying a late afternoon snack of sweet nectar from the Geraldton Wax blossoms.

Found in south-western Australia the Red-capped Parrot has a longer slimmer beak to enable it to get into gumnuts.

Going to 'refit' AcerRacer

Called DiscWorld to get a quote on resetting to factory defaults, thereby wiping the hard drive of programs I installed, copying that to a NEW hd, then upgrading to Win7 64.

The reason for all the steps are the legalities. Would be easier to just put in a new hard drive, but alas, no, have to do it this way.

Finally back to the archery range

First time in months. Between Aikidomayland's business trips, illness, injuries and WorldCon, we have been away for a few months. Still good to know that I can land the majority of my shots in the gold. But we do have to examine some of the arrows. Lost an arrowhead in one of the targets because the glue is just dried with age. It will give Aikidomayland something to keep him busy.

The 1st and the 3rd volume arrived

2nd volume is still in transit.

I had posted last month about VOX closing down with little notice. I decided to have that blog 'booked. It wasn't vanity, just that I was so tired of the ethereal nature of the internet, and the way things vanish.

I worked with the service, as they were just starting out, to hammer away at bugs, and flat out crashes to get it up and working before the Sept 15th deadline that Vox had laid on us. And after two weeks, just two days before the Vox deadline, everything came together, and I placed my order.

Here's Volume #1 and #3. #2 is still in transit.

They look great, and are very easy to read. I'm hoping that with enough interest that FeedFabrik's cost will go down. I know LuLu is out there, but I have to say, I am extremely satisfied with what FeedFabrik has done, and will probably order one volume at a time my LiveJournal from 2003.

Putting into practice

What I have learned from Greg, a manual, and one how to book.

The Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 XR Di lens has been sitting idle for a while now. And after a conversation (typed and talked) with Haeccitas I stopped being so hyped on IS only lenses. If you are using a fast enough lens, and high shutter speed IS isn't a huge priority.

I pestered Loki with the camera (he is great subject, grey scale kitty!) and the results were good. I still find adjusting the Custom White Balance on the fly a bit awkward, but am sure I will get the hang of it. :)

Body and Mind are linked

And Wing being ill now is proof of that.

The good news is he is feeling better.

The Better news is I convinced/cajoled Wing not to quit. He called my photography instructor/teacher, Greg, and spoke to him at length at what happened. To say Greg was appalled would be an understatement. Wing has signed up for the 6 week, one night a week, photography class, and guess what? He likes the Lumix! :D Wing will be bringing the Canon 300D with him too, to familiarize himself with certain functions.

I spoke at some length with Greg, and all I mentioned was the first name of one of the people at ****** ****, but didn't mention the name of the place, and he knew who they were. I have funny feeling this isn't the first time a disappointed student from them has made their way to Greg.

This is the first thing Wing has been seriously enthused about doing since Pop passed away. I am so glad he will be continuing his photography/camera studies. <|<|<| and there was much rejoicing |>|>|>

Now that was fast

Wing called the business partner, P, of the MISTAKE to cancel our booking of the hands on Photoshop course, and told P exactly why he was canceling. That "After the way I was treated on Saturday, I don't feel comfortable dealing with your company." and then went into detail as to the whats and whys.

P was aghast at what happened, and refunded our Photoshop course fees immediately, and then asked Wing to hold off calling the consumer protection, or whatever it's called in Australia, and I presume he spoke at some length with the MISTAKE.

P then called Wing back apologised profusely, and said they were refunding the Photo course fees in full. Then the MISTAKE got on the phone, and apologised up down and sideways to Wing. He said he was very sorry for his actions. That Wing's phone call to their business , withdrawal from the Photoshop course and the reasons behind it were a wake up call to the MISTAKE. He then asked Wing if he could ever find it in his heart to forgive him for how he had treated him, and Wing said "Maybe someday, but not now, I'm too angry with you." Wing was then offered the full Photography course free of charge. "Maybe some day, but not now" Mostly because he never wants to deal with the MISTAKE again.

I have an odd feeling they have had complaints lodged against them before, hence the almost begging not to call consumer protection. Doesn't really matter, but what matters is they fully admitted the MISTAKE was in the wrong, and needs a serious attitude adjustment. Maybe 20 mins or less on the tatami and Wing hefting a shinai would indelibly imprint that lesson on the MISTAKE. (weg)

*collapses in heap of nerves*

I submitted the last CanonEOS Photo5 Brief #5 Open Brief//Inspired By Sound.

I had originally thought of photographing someone playing a musical instrument, or maybe even photos of just musical instruments, but then I realised that wasn't the point of of the brief.

A photograph that I was inspired by sound to take.

Whispering Waves in the Pylons.

Inspired by the sound of waves lapping soothingly against the hulls of moored boats, and of the wind whistling through the ropes and hardware, almost lulling me into a doze. I watched and listened for about 10 minutes, enjoying the rise and fall of the boats while listening to the water gently lapping on them. Then it was a matter of getting the right angle on the pylons for a feeling of depth.

Well well well

The only thing on the MISTAKES website about refunds is if you cancel at the last minute, you only get 75% of your fee back.

I have taken time stamped screencaps and used Scrapbook to archive the pages. And with the experience Wing and at least one other person (if not two) went through, breach of contract is the least of the abrogations.

Our photography seminars and Photoshop workshops cover the core fundamentals through to imaging as a career, if you want to go that far.

The only thing you need is a desire to learn and have fun—our photography training will take care of the rest. The ********* ******** ****** is designed to give you all the information you need while allowing plenty of shooting opportunities to help you grow your skills quickly.

Many of our courses are practical sessions with a model giving you a great environment to take images and get immediate feedback. It all helps to make your learning fast, friendly and most of all, fun!

1: This course was not for beginners as stated, but for more advanced photographers. No 'core fundamentals' were taught, jumped right into advance full manual photography
2: Not given the info needed
3: Not many shooting opportunities as quick crappy snapshots in quick succession is NOT shooting opportunities.
4: No feedback given.
5: Environment was hostile and as far from fun for the beginners as possible.

No where in the description does it say "teacher will ridicule you for your choice of camera, or tell you how you should be spending your money on things other than what he deems as the proper cameras (his comment about Wing's tattoo)".

I want to tell this guy "You so f**ked over the wrong person."

This is why I know

A certain photography 'instructor' was only there to show off teacher's pet and to earn a quick 3k on the day.

Aikidomayland called, emailed and discussed much with the Instructor aka from now on the MISTAKE, the kind of camera he had, the level of novice he was the whole shebang. Mistake told him that would be just fine.

When Aikidomayland arrived, the MISTAKE looked at the Lumix, declared he didn't like it, and maybe if Aikidomayland didn't spend money on tattoos he could have gotten a 'proper' camera, and then the Mistake pretty much ignored him for the rest of the shoot, with the exceptions of a few snide comments aimed at those who he deemed unworthy by virtue of not having a Canon 5D or a high end Nikon. The only thing the Mistake said to Aikidomayland is that his photos looked too yellow in the preview screen. If the Mistake had taken just 30 seconds to look at the camera menu, he would have noticed that:

A: The color was set to VIVID
B: The Noise Reduction was set to HIGH

All this also would have been easily remedied if the MISTAKE had actually taken the SD card and looked at the RAW photos on a big screen. But, remember, the MISTAKE stated he didn't like the camera, and therefore deemed it not worth any of his time. And he pretty much treated Aikidomayland in that manner too.

I really wish I had been there. The nano his bull about cameras other than his precious worthies were useless, I would have said "Dude, your ass is sucking swamp water." If he had said to me that "Program mode is exactly like full Auto mode", I would have asked him if his head was up his ass.

Aikidomayland will be calling the consumer protection, as this course was advertised for BEGINNERS, and it was clearly for intermediate - advanced. It didn't say that three of the attendees would be the target of the MISTAKE's derision and ridicule, and then totally ignored. Example: his commenting about Aikidomayland not spending money on tattoo so he could 'afford' a better camera, berating another person for having a mint condition Canon Digital Rebel300 XT that was old and she should get rid of it, and picking on one woman because she was late in arrival because she wasn't from around there and she got lost.

Aikidomayland will also be calling to ask for a refund, even though the site says NO REFUNDS, he didn't get what he paid for, it wasn't as described, and the service was at the very least faulty. As many have pointed out, just because someone states NO REFUNDS doesn't mean he can get away with shoddy service and not expect his ripped off clients to not want or get their money back.

I wouldn't recommend this MISTAKE to anyone, whether for photo shoot, or for instructing, for in my own personal opinion (and a few others too) he is an asshat.

My biggest problem is Aikidomayland . He's trying to be too helpful. I want to submit the photo of my choice, not his.

Still no definitive answers

Got the USB thumb drive and ran the Acer Diagnostic, and memory, GPU, CPU and hard drive checks out just fine. At least I know what the problem is not. Not a hardware failure or fault.

And before I start reading the hoary old chant of "Get a Mac" or "Go to Linux!", after doing much reading on the GREY SCREEN OF DEATH, it seems to be an equal opportunity screw up. Macs, Linux, and PCs. And according to many forums and newsletters I have been reading, it could very well be the ATI graphic drivers, not the card.

I guess I wait to hear back from ATI now.

Dear IINET, you're rather sneaky

But seeing as I always record purchases and upgrades done online with both ScrapBook (archives the entire page as html) and PageSaver (jpg or png screen capture) I have found out just how sneaky you are.

I blogged about how twice in less than a year, it turned out we were paying more for 'grandfathered' broadband plans and getting less. So we upgraded to 75/75 plan. Then they upgraded everyone to 85/85 but didn't mention that the On peak/off peak hours had been changed. We found out and adjusted our scheduling to comply.

Now, we once again found out that there was a BIGGER BETTER plan for same amount and we upgraded again. But I screen captured the webpage describing the different broadband plans.

Here is the one I screen capped on the day we upgraded to the 100/100

Here's a screen cap that I took about 10 minutes ago. Something has been added to the bottom that wasn't there the previous time.

The only silver lining in this, is that the 'capped' speed, because of latency, only slows us down about 30% so we can deal with that. But sneaky shenanigans like this just is not right. Shame on you IINET.

And so it begins

Aikidomayland has been playing around with photography for about 3 months now. He more he does, the more he wants to learn.

Now, he will be the first one to tell you he doesn't have a creative bone in his body but since good photography can be broken down into numbers (F-Stops, Exposure times, ISO ratings) and he is an accountant, he will end up by the grace of his being an accountant do the formulas correctly and take good photographs.

He told me about a dream he had last night, about some images/photos he seemed to have taken, and when he described them, I told him it could be done. Instant panicky look on his face when he said "But I don't know how to do that!" I reminded him that is what he was taking crash course, and having me tutor him on how to use Photoshop was for. Now he can't get those dreamt images out of his mind.

And so it begins...

Photography lessons

Aikidomayland wants to get better accustomed with the Lumix settings, and I have no problem with showing him the ropes. The only problem is he doesn't like using the info he is given.

Point: last night he wanted to try out some low light/night photography. I showed him and had him repeat what I had done (using full manual, using shutter speed etc), but he keeps wanting to fall back on the 'automatic' settings, and then complains they don't work. (headdesk)

Updating drivers, grrrr

Spent about 2 hours puzzling out why the hell my touch screen stopped being a touch screen. Turns out that the "New and Improved" drivers for my Intuos 3 weren't the right ones. Mine isn't a touch tablet, but the 'antiquated' tablet that uses a stylus.

Uninstalled the Wacom software, rebooted, and all is well again. Beginning to wonder if that's what was causing the hardlock errors, as I was typically using it with a graphics program when it would happen. Wait and see, I guess.

Went to Tai Chi tonight. We aren't going to do the 6 month membership for a while, as Aikidomayland's business trips makes our attending every week iffy.

With profound sadness, we have to announce that our dear friend and colleague, Stephen Cannell, has lost a brave fight against cancer. He passed away at his home last night. He will be missed beyond measure by the Cannell Team and all of us who had the privilege and the plain good luck to know and work with him. Through the legacy of his body of work, with which he was able to entertain and enrich the lives of millions of viewers and thousands of readers, he will always be with us, living on in our hearts and minds, with fond memories forever.

Ocean Sunset

After some 'gentle' prodding from ShadoutCarver , I posted this on the Pixarra site for the chance to will a perpetual license for TwistedBrush.

Yes, 'gentle', because she couldn't smack me upside the head. Distance and all that.

Possibly last soup of the year

Or maybe not, but tonight I am taking one left over turkey drumstick and turning it into turkey 'n stars soup. Pot of water, seasonings, turkey, stars and veggies. Easy. and cheap.

Will be a nice surprise for Aikidomayland when he gets back from the dojo. Maybe I will make some more cornbread to go with it.
