Got the USB thumb drive and ran the Acer Diagnostic, and memory, GPU, CPU and hard drive checks out just fine. At least I know what the problem is not. Not a hardware failure or fault.
And before I start reading the hoary old chant of "Get a Mac" or "Go to Linux!", after doing much reading on the GREY SCREEN OF DEATH, it seems to be an equal opportunity screw up. Macs, Linux, and PCs. And according to many forums and newsletters I have been reading, it could very well be the ATI graphic drivers, not the card.
I guess I wait to hear back from ATI now.
